This month’s luncheon will feature Assistant District Attorney Stephanie N. Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell is one of 93 assistant district attorneys who work closely with law enforcement agencies throughout Dallas County to prosecute cases in 17 felony district courts. On average, this division handles over 27,000 felony cases a year. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is the second largest jurisdiction in the State of Texas. Housed in the Frank Crowley Courts Building on the edge of downtown Dallas it provides legal representation on behalf of the State in both criminal misdemeanor and felony cases filed in the County.
About STEPHANIE N. MITCHELL – Assistant District Attorney Stephanie N. Mitchell is a felony two prosecutor assigned to the State Jail
Felony Division of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. In this role, she manages all of the state jail felony cases assigned to four felony district courts.
The Felony Trial Division handles all cases involving offenses for which the punishment set by law is either incarceration in a state jail facility or the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (state penitentiary), or by death in capital murder cases. This division is responsible for the prosecution of murders, sexual assaults, robberies, burglaries, aggravated assaults and all other felony offenses not assigned to a specialized division.
Prior to moving into the State Jail Felony Division, Ms. Mitchell was assigned to the Family Violence Division where she prosecuted a variety of family violence offenses including but not limited to Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault and Stalking.
A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Ms. Mitchell earned her Juris Doctorate degree from the University Of Kansas School Of Law and a Bachelor of Political Science from the University Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In school she served as President of the Black Law Students Association and was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
She has been practicing law for 7 years, doing civil litigation and criminal defense prior to starting her prosecutorial career at the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office before coming to Dallas County in 2007. As a misdemeanor prosecutor, she received the coveted “Heavy Hitter” award for her outstanding jury trial statistics and was subsequently recognized as the 2010 “Rookie of the Year” for the misdemeanor division.
In 2012, she assisted in starting the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Citizen Prosecutor Academy, where she acted as a host prosecutor and speaker. Ms. Mitchell’s outstanding track record of successfully prosecuting felony cases and working with victims of domestic violence led to her being awarded the 2012 Dallas County District Attorney’s Office “Prosecutor of the Year Award”.Outside of the DA’s office, she works as an Adjunct Professor at Kaplan College teaching courses in their Criminal Justice and Paralegal programs.
